Astrology Is Even Dumber Than You Think

Live Science reports:
The folks over at have outdone themselves with a set of predictions for 2011 based on your horoscope. The horoscopes offer "a good, long look at what the stars have in store for you this year!"
Problem is, the predictions are all wrong. Why? Because, simply, the stars are not aligned as the prognosticators think.

Your zodiac sign — Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces — was originally based on the constellation the sun was in the day you were born. Thing is, Earth wobbles, a phenomenon called precession.

Over the 2,500 years or so since the zodiac was established, your sign has moved about a month relative to the sun and stars. You're no longer what you think you are, and so if you're an astrology buff, perhaps poised to make a New Year's resolution based on the stars and a reading of your supposed personality, know that you're actually following observations, predictions and advice aimed at another person entirely.

Still, 25 percent of Americans say they believe in astrology (which, it should be pointed out for those who might not know, is NOT a science).
Those who have ceased to believe in God...

  1. There are so many other things besides this long known progression. The adding of Uranus & Neptune. Then there is Pluto. So now that it was demoted, does it still count? Or do we add Ceres, Eris & the other dwarfs. The fact that the actual area of the different constelations isn't uniform, or that the moon goes through other constelations besides the 12.
& that is only a small part of many things that show how non scientific it is.
OK, I'll admit as a youth I somewhat bought into it. But, I came to realize the truth, it isn't compatable with being Catholic & is wrong to participate in, like seances etc.
But like you said, those who cease to believe in God. Which is why it is so big in New Age circles.

  2. Al: I hadn't even thought about the planets. Once again, Astrology proves even dumber than initially thought.

New Age beliefs are useful in that they demonstrate the difference between irrational superstition like astrology, and rational faith like Christianity.
